Three white hyacinth bulbs bought in the new year and planted in a Victorian, china spit bowl thrifted on a visit to Hay on Wye. The series examines family dynamics and relationships through the poetic symbolism of flowers.
The artist has said of her painting of flowers in mid winter:
‘It felt as though all the flowers in my garden had died and there was no colour left in the world until I noticed the hibernating bulbs blossoming everywhere in pots ~ shouting to be seen. I found them joyful during the cold snaps and snowy storms we had at the beginning of our winter here in Wales. They warmed the studio space and brought life back to my painting.’ (Joanne Headington)
