Born in South Wales, Joanne Headington is an artist of more than 40 years. She is a painter of both her interior and exterior worlds and produces work in the studio after sketches and colour notes made during walks outdoors. Her stongest works are her abstract expressionist paintings and drawings. Like Bonnard, she paints from memory of place and focuses on creating a painting that expresses her experience. She is facinated with themes of division, separation, obtacles, absence and loss.

Most commonly, landscapes are the forms she chooses to explore these themes, using light and colour, shadow and dynamic mark making. But her recent still life paintings of flowers (which have a darker underlying theme associated with them) began a brief dive into studying form more intensely once again. She said of this period of time: “It felt like being back in the art classroom at school again. Like learning all over again how to draw, how to see, even how to paint. I had become so far removed from this during that time, I had to start somewhere.”

This led to the Chair Paintings.

When recently confronted with distressing scenes online of mothers waiting to be reunited with their children after forcible separation during war, the subject of the empty chair became more than a study of a stuido chair. It became the focus in which to creative a narrative - turning a solid object into a moving image. Empty chairs they may be, lifeless, they certainly are not. These paintings can be purchased only on request.

Oil paint is her favoured medium, although she continues to explore the use of other mediums and considers herself a multi-diciplinary artist. She works on small surfaces, canvas and paper, (her largest comissioned painting 1500 × 1000cm), which suits her working practice and current studio space.
