About

Born in South Wales, UK, Joanne Headington is a modern expressionist painter. She currently resides and works from her cottage studio in Wales, where she continues to develop a fluidity of style with multi media on canvas and paper. Her work is usually small, no larger than 25 x 25 inches unless commissioned and often as small as 6 x 4 inches. She enjoys exploring all forms of painting techniques. Her abstract painting period was where she fully embraced expressing emotional responses to her environment and relationship to nature. It was during this period that she embraced the use of colour in her work. Previously, she used drawing and a very limited, monochrome palette. She acknowledges the pure joy that colour can convey in a painting but resists an ease of looking. Close cropping or difficult lighting in her paintings resist ease of access, but her works reward a closer look.

Currently, she is examining how still life painting can be used as metaphor and symbolism within narrative work. Her work has a complicated history, with long periods of disruption due to frequent displacements and interruptions but her persistance in returning to painting testify of her resiliance and commitment to pursuing art as a vocation and purpose - even more so in the later years of her life.
