From the series ‘Chair Paintings’.
The artist has used the subject of chairs and stools to explore the themes within relationships of absence, waiting and longing. Working over many versions with acrylic paint makes the work appear deceptively spontaneous. The flow and movement in the small paintings tell their own stories, but the artist has said of the work:
‘This series of work was triggered by my response to a short film I watched of mother’s sitting in a room, waiting to be reunited with their children after long periods of enforced separation. It was a very difficult film to watch and I needed to explore my reaction to it. The violent act of separating a baby from the mother was a constant reference to creating the paintings and the shadows also play an important supporting role in the work. ’ (Joanne Headington)
