Dappled Sunlight on the Farmhouse Chair ~ An oil painting of the Welsh Farmhouse Chair in my studio

£350.00

From the series ‘Chair Paintings’.

‘This large oil painting of the farmhouse chair in the studio is an examination of dappled light and shadows streaming in through the studio window during one week of early Spring Sunshine. The sun was low and brief, so the work was intense and the work needed to be completed quite quickly - so the use of Sennelier Oil Sticks were perfect for this work.’ (Joanne Headington)

These paintings are not only about chairs as a subject, though they can certainly be enjoyed in that way. The artist has used the subject of an old farmhouse chair to explore the spatial relationships and emotional responses to empty chairs in a room. She has explored themes of absence, waiting, longing and balance. Working over many versions with acrylic paint makes the work appear deceptively spontaneous.

‘Flow and movement became an important aspect of the painting for me the longer I studied the solid object of an old chair and then the shadows began to play a crucial supporting role in the work. ’ (Joanne Headington)
